DCSC August 17th: Slow Pony

  • Race Brook Lodge 864 South Undermountain Road Sheffield, MA, 01257 United States (map)

Slow Pony is an Accordion and Tenor Banjo duo that performs music from many far (some no-longer-existing) corners of the globe. Its hard to say where this musical duo is from. Savannah originally hails from North Carolina and Eli from Vermont, but these days they call everywhere and mostly nowhere home. They met many years ago in New Orleans, (or was it New Mexico?) and have since performed music from coast to coast.

Their travels, experiences, and cultural interests form the patchwork of Slow Pony's eclectic repertoire. They study and perform a wide array of music, featuring jazz tunes from Brazil to Ethiopia, folk musics from the Balkans to the Philippines, and evocative originals that are as hard to put your finger on as they are. They have even been known to sneak in some Russian opera on a rainy day.

The combination of the Tenor Banjo and Piano Accordion is both strikingly familiar and hauntingly novel. Their instruments may be twice their elders, but the music that comes forth is sharp, emotive, stimulating to the senses, and has been known to get both babies and grandma dancing! Calling all who dream to dance the tango! To stumble around in odd time meters! To wear sunglasses at night and wiggle a finger to some gypsy jazz! Catch Slow Pony while you can!
