Driftwood Chorus & Hinterlands: Panoramic Polyphony

  • Race Brook Lodge Race Brook Lodge Sheffield United States (map)

We are thrilled to invite groundbreaking interpreter of Balkan Romani songs, Eva Salina, back to RBL after her celebrated concert last spring. This time, however, Eva comes as the director of Driftwood - a Hudson Valley community chorus. This recently-formed polyphonic chorale rehearses at the Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff, NY, on banks of the Hudson River, which is tidal all the way up to Troy. Driftwood's songs are gathered and shared from a variety of traditions, and include Balkan, Corsican, Georgian, Ukrainian and American folk harmonies.

Joining Driftwood on this special Saturday as a co-bill we welcome back the remarkable duet, HINTERLANDS: an accordion and violin duo that combines songcraft with improvisation. Between new music and folk trance, the performances of violinist Ben Russell and accordionist Matt Schreiber conjure a musical world where boundaries blur and new resonance is born. Russell’s Drone-heavy violin stylings call upon western classical, North Indian and Appalachian influences, and intermix with Schreiber's virtuosic Balkan accordion bursts. Coupled with the raw intensity of shape-note singing in their original vocals the two virtuosos evoke wild mountainous and oceanic soundscapes in varied time signatures and bold improvisations. HINTERLANDS are known for how well they listen to each other - and how they conjure such focused listening out of their audiences. Both inviting and explosive, Hinterlands transports audiences through a prism of color, light, and sound.

Stay over with us! Race Brook is offering a 20% discount on overnight accommodations for guests attending the concert using code DRIFTWOOD.
